Process addictions, also called behavioral addictions, involve a psychological dependence on a behavior or activity. Behavioral addictions do not rely on alcohol or drugs, but can often have the same negative impact on lives as addictions to drugs.
As with other types of addiction, process addictions involve loss of control, failed attempts to stop, and a pattern of increasingly negative consequences resulting from the compulsive behavior.
Millions of Americans struggle with process addictions. According to a 2006 Stanford University study, 5.8 percent of Americans are compulsive shoppers, or more than 15 million Americans. More than 30 million people in the U.S. are thought to have some form of sexual addiction.
